Karoline Leavitt quit the White House to be a mom. Now she's unloading on Democrats

She left the briefing room in August saying her kids came first. Since then she has told Hannity viewers that Democrats want to end America, signed with Fox News and split the internet in two.

Key points
  • She left in August saying she couldn't be the mom her kids deserved
  • Weeks later she told Republicans to "ruthlessly prosecute the Democrats"
  • Fox News made her an official contributor from 1 November

Karoline Leavitt looked straight into the Fox News camera and did not hold back.

"Over the next 36 days, Republicans, and I know President Trump is going to do it, must ruthlessly prosecute the Democrats as who they are," she told Sean Hannity in late September.

Then she listed who that was. "Extreme far-left liberals who want to destroy our economy, want to take away your private property, raise your taxes, take your hard-earned money, abolish prisons, abolish police."

A month earlier she was still the White House press secretary. Now she is a private citizen with no podium and, her fans say, no filter. A clip of her latest tear has passed 427,000 views this week, and the comments are a war zone.

Why did Karoline Leavitt leave the White House?

President Trump broke the news on 12 August. He said Leavitt would leave at the end of the month "so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family."

Leavitt gave birth to her second child, a daughter named Viviana, in May. She also has a young son.

Her own statement was personal. "The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary," she said, according to PBS NewsHour.

She called it a "bittersweet decision."

Her last day was 27 August 2026. She had held the job since January 2025 and was the youngest press secretary in American history. She was also the first to do the job while pregnant.

Is Karoline Leavitt really staying home with her kids?

That is the question critics keep asking. "I thought she was going to stay home with her children?" reads one reply under the clip.

Leavitt never said she was quitting work. Trump said from day one that she would become "one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party."

She went back to MAGA Inc., the pro-Trump super PAC where she was a spokesperson before the 2024 campaign. She is now an outside adviser there, The Daily Beast reported.

And she has been on TV a lot. On 18 September she sat down with Hannity, and Fox posted the segment under the title "Democrats want to destroy America". He floated a show for her on the spot. "How does it sound, The Briefing With Karoline Leavitt?" he asked.

She laughed it off. "I will continue to join your show anytime you want, that's for sure," she said.

What did Karoline Leavitt say about Democrats?

The appearance that lit the fuse came on Hannity on 28 September. Leavitt went after Democratic candidates, including Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico.

Her claim was that Democrats hide who they are. "They campaign as moderates," she said. Then, "when they are elected, they govern as complete radical extreme liberal lunatics."

She went further. She said Democrats want to "open our borders to insane people from all over this world and end America as we know her and love her."

Fans loved it. The account that shared the clip called her "FERAL" and "savage" and said she had decided "the filter was government property."

There was one stumble. In the same breath she said Democrats "do 360s on every single policy position." A 360 turns you all the way back to where you started. Critics online pounced, joking that she had accidentally praised Democrats for never changing their minds. One former math teacher replied with a simple "Oh my god."

Why does she sound so different now?

Her fans have a theory, and it is all over the replies. As press secretary, they say, she had to watch every word.

Federal workers fall under a law called the Hatch Act. It limits how far government employees can go in campaigning for a party while they are on the job. Supporters argue that is why the podium version of Leavitt sounded careful, and the Hannity version sounds like this.

One viewer from Germany wrote that they wished their own country's news anchors would speak their minds the same way.

Not everyone sees it as freedom. Critics in the same thread say she simply "fell for the money." Others say the line between media and government is gone, and Leavitt is the proof.

Did Karoline Leavitt join Fox News?

Yes. On 5 October, Fox News confirmed she will become an official on-air contributor starting 1 November. The New York Times broke the story first.

"Karoline's firsthand experience in the White House and on the presidential campaign trail gives her a distinct understanding of today's political landscape," said Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott, Fox News reported.

Leavitt said she was "grateful for the opportunity." She promised to bring "the unique perspective and candor that defined my tenure with the Trump administration," Mediaite reported.

She joins two other former press secretaries already on the network, Dana Perino and Kayleigh McEnany.

The timing is awkward. Trump has been publicly fuming at Fox for not covering his rallies. In a Truth Social post he warned that viewers "will very quickly stop watching (like I am doing right now!)." His former spokesperson is now heading straight into the building he is mad at.

Who replaced Karoline Leavitt as press secretary?

Nobody, so far. Six weeks after her last day, the White House has not named a new press secretary.

Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Attorney General Todd Blanche have taken turns speaking for the administration, according to The Daily Beast. Trump also does plenty of talking himself, like when he spoke about a plague scare and a reported call with Putin on the South Lawn this week.

Names keep floating around. Principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly is seen by many as the natural pick. CNN commentator Scott Jennings and communications director Steven Cheung have also been mentioned. Former Trump lawyer Alina Habba was named in reports too, but she said she is "not in the running for any job."

Leavitt's old briefings covered everything from tariffs to the Afrikaner refugees the US took in. Whoever takes the podium next inherits an empty chair and a very loud former owner.

What can Karoline Leavitt say now that she couldn't before?

Pretty much anything.

At the podium, every sentence was the official voice of the United States government. Now the only person she speaks for is Karoline Leavitt.

She can campaign. She can name candidates and tell voters who to throw out. She can call Democrats "lunatics" one Monday and sign a TV deal the next. And with the midterms on 3 November, the timing could not be bigger.

Her first official day at Fox comes two days before Americans vote. A former press secretary, freshly unfiltered, with a primetime audience and nothing left to hold her back.

Her fans think they have only seen the warm-up. Her critics agree. That might be the one thing both sides of the internet can say about Karoline Leavitt right now.
